Product Retouching by Freelance Retoucher John Deaville
With over 20 years of experience in product retouching, I’ve successfully completed numerous Packshot and Product Retouching projects. Among my diverse retouching specialties, product postproduction stands out due to its versatility and importance across various industries.
My work has left its mark on renowned brands such as Innocent, Vodafone, Avon, LSA, Debeers, Lancome, Rodial, and others.
Packshot retouching, in particular, holds a special place in my heart due to its meticulous nature. While some projects offer room for creative expression, most demand adherence to the provided brief for precision and accuracy.
A typical project entails:
- Horizontally and vertically straightening elements
- Pathing and cutting out elements for individual manipulation
- Placing each element into a masked folder to adjust luminosity and color
- Ensuring smooth, wrinkle-free surfaces, free of reflections and imperfections
- Adding flat artwork (CMYK .EPS) to blank labels for readability and additional language inclusion
- Adjusting hues for different color variations, made easy by separate folders for each object
- Matching colors precisely to product specifications
This level of detail is usually achieved by deconstructing the image into manageable parts. Paths and masks are used to isolate individual objects and elements, allowing for independent adjustments. For example, on my before and after retouching page showcasing the Gallagher Cup, we eliminated reflections by isolating panels and creating artificial reflections using gradients, resulting in a reflection-free chrome-like finish.
