Photo Retouching Before and After Examples

I have created several pages showcasing examples of before and after photo retouching projects. Select the area that interests you.

I am a general retoucher with no specific specialization. Over the last 20 years, I have worked for a range of clients with diverse requirements. My experience spans many niches, including Beauty Retouching, Product Retouching, and Advertising Retouching.

Advertising Retouching

In the above image for Milwaukee Powertools, I enhanced this image by:

creating a HDR version of the image by fusing multiple exposures of the image to create local contrast and detail
altering the contrast and saturation of the image to highlight the key branding red colour
selectively brushed highlight detail to emphasise the contours of the image
created debris and smoke to emphasise the drill action as well as making the subject ‘pop’

Beauty Retouching

In this image, I cleaned and perfected all the skin tones and textures.

People and Portrait Retouching

I manipulated this image of Buzz Aldrin to resemble a vintage ‘tintype’ photograph. The adjustments included:

Adding lens blur to create a shallow depth of field, akin to vintage tintypes.
Using color mixer layers to enhance contrast.
Applying an HDR effect to add detail to the skin, enhanced with a high pass.
Overlaying a painted texture to add a vintage feel to the entire frame.
Utilizing color gradients to create an interesting grade.

Illustrative and Creative Retouching

This image blends two stock images. I achieved this effect by:

Drawing accurate paths and masks around objects like the swimmers and buildings, allowing selective grading and separation from other elements.
Adding a dramatic new skyline.
Creating a visually stimulating color scheme of saturated blue and sepia.
Recreating the original splashing using custom Photoshop brushes.

Product Retouching

For this project, I was provided with 2 images, one with ribbons and one without. I created several versions of the trophy with/without ribbons and socks. To do this I:

used the body of the image shown above (with ribbons)
pathed around the etchings so I could add the etching back on top of the new panels of chrome
pathed around the panels and added gradients to create new, clean chrome with no reflections.
created a bevelled look by using black and white line created by the paths above
used several images of sock to create the socks and reflections
provided all final images as cutouts so the designer could incorporate into their artwork
