Before and After Examples from People and Portrait Retoucher John Deaville
PR and Portrait Retoucher samples from some of my projects. I am currently updating this section to include before and after sliders. I am also adding quicktime animations showing stages of the retouching process.
Start by utilizing the slider to unveil the before and after stages or engage with the quicktime movies by playing the animation or utilizing the scrubber at the base of the video. Alternatively, explore the details of my People, Portrait, and PR Retouching Services.
Portrait Examples
This image of Buzz Aldrin was manipulated to look like a vintage ‘tintype’ photograph. . The adjustments included:
- lens blur added to create a shallow depth of field (like the vintage tintype).
- colour mixer layers to create a higher contrast.
- HDR effect to add detail to skin enhanced with a high pass.
- a painted texture was overlaid to add texture to the whole frame.
- colour gradients to create an interesting grade.
These images underwent adjustments such as:
- Introducing black and white filters and additional curves to reduce saturation and enhance contrast.
- Applying a faux HDR effect to amplify skin detail.
- Illuminating the eyes to enhance focal points.
These examples represent two of many images in a comprehensive selection, all of which received:
- Addition of hue saturation layers and curves to heighten overall contrast while reducing saturation.
- Application of a faux HDR effect for skin detail enhancement.
- Implementation of dodging and burning techniques to accentuate muscle tone.
- Supplying all images as cutouts for seamless integration into artwork.
These are three samples from a vast selection of images, all treated with:
- Addition of hue saturation layers and curves to increase overall contrast and reduce saturation.
- Application of a faux HDR effect to enhance skin detail.
- Supplying all images as cutouts for easy integration into artwork.
A blast from the past! Here’s an image from my first job at a photographic studio. The photographer specialized in underwater fashion and editorial projects. They took this photo of actress Keira Knightley in the underwater tank at Pinewood Studios. Moreover, it was part of a larger series featuring many celebrities for a charity project. The images reflect each individual’s background; therefore, Keira posed with film props.
PR Examples
In this PR image, we lightly retouched and balanced the faces while also refining various room details to remove clutter and enhance overall tidiness. An additional vignette was added to draw attention to the figures at the center of the frame.
In this series of PR images, we encountered challenging lighting situations, necessitating the overlay of multiple exposures for enhancement. Retouching efforts included:
- Refinement of wall edges.
- Polishing of surfaces such as laptops and tables.
- Creation of new walls to eliminate distractions and accommodate text overlay.
- Removal of logos.
These adjustments serve to refine and enhance the focus of each image, ensuring clarity and impact. Take a look at my people, portrait and pr retouching portfolio for more finished examples. Alternatively, feel free to contact me for more information.
